Vilmány 1937 11/9 Szeretet Kedves bátyám! elsöbben is igy szolok hozád dicsértessék az úr Jézus szent neve most és mindörökké amen Kedves bátyám a hozzám küldöt soraidat megkaptam amely igazán igen megörvendeztetet mert bizon nekem ugy sincs már semi öröm a világon mert e télen nagyon sokat szenvedek a szivemre egy nap sem lehetek orvoság nélkül és még a köszvény is igen ront Kedves testvér írod hogy nem a legjob helyzetbe vagytok hát én mit szóljak akor hozá ezen a szegény csonka magyarországba kenyér kereső nélkül igaz hogy mindenki azt írja amerikából is de azért azt is hozá teszik hogy azért amerika mindég amerika nem magyarország no de ezeket hagyjuk csak ez én rajtam ugy sem segít semit sem.
[Page 2] Most már kedves testvér tudatlak hogy férjem halála után ki estünk a szolgálatból és mert szegény mikor meghalt hát akor a grófok idahza voltak és azt mondták még élek az uradalomba helyem van fiammal együt ép ugy mint azelőt de mivel ők nincsenek it hol csak egyszer vagy kétszer egy év alat azt is nagyon kevés időre tehát az ithol valok sok mindent eldöntenek ök nálok nélkül igaz hogy az intéző sem mutatta soha az irigységét de ha anyira levette a komencziót hogy én aból sehogy sem tudtam volna meg élni tehát kénytelen voltunk aba hagyni a szolgálatot és mivel anyi a szegény hogy majd csak ingyen be ál szolgálni hogy csak álása legyen hát nem kapot szegény fiam sehol állást így tehát kénytelenek voltunk ide vilmányba költözködni
[Page 3] Tehát kedves testvér elképzelheted a hejzetemet mert egész télen pénzből tartom a jószágaimat mert mikor ellehetet volna adni nem volt seminek semi ára tehát nagyon sajnátuk a fiamal együt őket eladni mert nagyon nehezen tudta szegény boldogult férjem ösze szerezni demár a télel csak megsegít a jó isten de majd nyárára hová fogjuk tenni még azt nem tudom most sem hát most kedves testvér ha el akarod a helyzetemet ismerni elgondolhatod igaz hogy még nagyon sok mondani való volna de nem akarok már sokat panaszkodni elég aból anyi hogy a háború örökre tönkre tette az országot. Kedves egy drága jó testvérem ha meg nem sértenélek hogy ha szives lenél nekem küldeni egy jó szem üveget mert már a szemeim nagyon gyengék és már nagyon sokat probáltam itenit demég egyet sem találtam jót
[Page 4] és amerikait akár hanyat próbáltam az mind jó volt mert már nagyon sokat küldtek a faluba mert hidmeg kedves testvér nincs ház ahova nem gyünek a csomagok de hiába szegények vagyunk és felhasználnak a magyarok most mindenfélét amit a más országiak eldobnak mert nincs ház ahol nincs amerikai ócska ruha lábbeli vagy tea és stb tehát kedves testvér nagyon kérlek küld el ezt a kis csekéjséget lehet hogy majd megsegít a jó isten hogy még visza szolgálhatom és most még nagyon kérem a lányaidat különösen akiknek már vanak gyerekeik hogy ha küldenének az onokáimnak is valami ocska kis ruhát mert már bizon nekem is van három onokám 5 éves a legnagyob kislány kétéves mult a kis fiú és szintén most születet egy kislány megint és ők is szintén a vőmék magok tartják a juhaikat fulókércs csen bérelt legelöt mert máma számtalanok vagyunk szolgálatnélkül
[Page 5] Kedves testvér küldök neked egy fényképet ha meg nem sértlek vele a fiamat küldöm csak nincs magányos képe ezen is egy onoka testvére van és egy barátja az a fiam a ki roknélkül vagyis szveterbe van iletve ül és göndörhajú nagy bajúszos más külömben azt hiszem hogy a Lázár fajtát megismered enyi a vigasztalom legyen hála érte az egek urának mert jóságát nem tudom neked kimondani még idáig mert más félévig szegény apját hiba nélkül teljesitette csak aza legnagyob bánatom megint hogy most már tavasszal sorozák őket és nincs felmentés
[Page 6] Mármost soraim zártával maradtam hű testvéred tisztelettünket küldjük az összes gyermekeid és az egész rokonságnak különösen a kis fiadnak és onokáidnak a távolból isten veled velünk is válasz várok a czímet így írd özv Lukács Józsefné Vilmány abauj megye.

[Page 1] Dated on November 9, 1937 Dear beloved brother, let me first praise the holy name of lord Jesus forever and always amen(.) Dear brother I got your letter which made me truly joyful(,) for indeed there is no joy left for me in this world anymore(.) this winter I suffer a lot because of my heart, I cannot have a day without medication and the gout kills me, too(.) Dear brother(,) in your letter you wrote you had seen better days but what can I say in this poor truncated Hungary without a breadwinner(?) Indeed everyone in America has been writing about struggles too but also adding that America is still America not Hungary but let’s not get into that for that does not help me at all anyway.
[Page 2] Now dear brother I am letting you know that after my husband died we lost our job at the estate because when he poor thing died the counts were here at home and they told me that as long as I lived I could stay with my son just like before but since they are only at home once or twice a year for a very short stay only therefore those who are managing things here are the decision makers most of the times(.) the steward however never showed any ill intention toward us but lowered our share so much that I would have never been able to make ends meet so we were forced to quit the service and because there are so many poor people who would work for free almost just to have a job my poor son did not get a job therefore we had to move over here to Vilmány
[Page 3] So dear brother you can imagine my situation since I need money to keep my livestock all winter long for when it was time to sell them prices were so very low that my son and I had a hard time selling them since my poor late husband had such a hard time paying for them(.) hope the good Lord will help us through this winter somehow but I don’t know yet where we’ll place them this summer(.) so dear brother if you want to imagine my situation here it is but indeed there is so much more to talk about and I do not want to complain any longer(,) only to add the war destroyed the country forever. My beloved dearest only brother(,) if I am not offending you I would like to kindly ask you to send me a good pair of glasses since my eyes are getting very weak and I tried on a lot here already but never could find a good pair
[Page 4] and all the American ones I tried on so far worked because so many of them have been sent to the village already(.) for believe me dear brother there is no house in the village where packages are not arriving to but we are poor indeed and the Hungarians are using everything that are thrown away in other countries for there is no house without some old used American clothes, shoes or tea, etc. so dear brother I am asking you kindly to send this little thing with God’s help I might be able to return the favor someday(.) and I am kindly asking your daughters especially those who already have children to send my grandchildren some old hand-me-down clothes because I also have three grandchildren, too(,) the oldest one is a girl(,) 5 years old(,) the little boy passed two years and they just had another girl(.) and my son-in-law and daughter are raising sheep in fulókércs (Fúlókércs) on rented pasture because these days there are countless of us without work
[Page 5] Dear brother, if I am not insulting you I am sending you a picture of my son, however, there is no picture of him alone(,) this one is with one of his cousins and a friend(.) my son is the one who has no coat on and is wearing a sweater also he is sitting with a big mustache and curly hair, you will recognize the Lázár-type I believe. Let me have this much consolation, thank the Lord whose generosity I cannot praise enough because so far he has done his father’s work without a mistake for a year and a half(.) but now to my deepest sorrow they are getting drafted and there is no exemption
